When summer vacation is over but the heat remains, the working person is forced to trade in the cool comfort surrounding the pool for the dull uniformity surrounding the water cooler. But you can bring that same comfort to your workplace with the right wardrobe.
Let’s start with an obvious choice. When you’re in the office, dress is formal, but not “funeral!” Lose all of that black, unless you’re an executive. You will want to keep it black or pinstriped (though, if you run the place, you set the rules on this one). In the work place, your colors should be bright and your fabrics light.
For men, a Polo Sport Shirt will achieve this. Available at Polo by Ralph Lauren, a solid or striped sport shirt will inspire a summer feel while maintaining a business air. And those pastels you own aren’t all for Easter. A pastel Oxford works great here. However, I suggest avoiding a checkered print. Unless you’re dressing for the company picnic, stay away!
Linen is another obvious choice for fabric, but the rigors of the day can’t ever be predicted. When you start off at 9:00 with 5:00 on your mind, you need clothes that are going to make it through the day with you. After speaking with a Brooks Brothers representative I found that they offer such items, which function in and out of the workplace.
Their trademarked Non Ironed Shirt (available for men and women) is a casual choice, ideal for work or travel. It’s wash and dry and, as the name suggests, does not need to be ironed. It comes out of the drier with a permanent crease that keeps it looking crisp all day. And the same technology is found in their Advantage Chinos; wrinkle free with a crease that won’t quit. Though they stay pressed, both items have a relaxed fit that’s neither stiff nor starchy.
The Chinos, like the Non Ironed Shirt, are a study in convenience. But as material goes, you can go lighter. A silken, linen blend trouser is much breezier and feels great on the skin, while Tissue Weight Khakis are guaranteed not to weigh you down.
Chinos and Khakis work for either sex but some women may be seeking something a little less androgynous. Try a ‘summer crop’ for a more feminine feel. The cuff will come up just above the ankle and leave that part of the body exposed for ventilation. Breezeway Crops have swept into Anthropologie this season. These wide legged trousers are cuffed with a tied waist. The crop may be a little high (calf height) but if you’re behind a desk for the better part of the day, give them a try. For a more conservative look, the Moreno Cuffed Trouser is where to turn. Though a little more traditional, the flared legs are very stylish. However the crop is a bit long.
The positive traits of both the Breezeway and the Moreno are blended together in the features of Anthropologie’s Cropped Button Trouser. In this you have the classic look of a man’s trouser (flat front pleating) with a crop for the woman in the workplace.
If skirts are more your style, there are many options there as well, from the Sweet Life to the Dotted Arbor Skirt. The former is sure to brighten up the office with its light pink, horizontal, candied stripes while the latter’s large Polka Dots are overlaid with leaves to create the illusion of fruit. Candy is tempting and fruit is healthy, but those two items will only leave admires with an appetite for your wardrobe.
Either can be paired with a blouse to complete the ensemble. Sleeveless is going to get you the coolest so their Albertina and Gaslight Blouses are best, but there are many other options. If you don’t want to put something together, the Capsleeve Wrap Shirt Dress is a sure bet. It’s sleek and sassy with a neckline that is simultaneously plunging and tasteful. This is perhaps the essential piece for the lady’s summer workplace wardrobe.
If you are a bit more eclectic in taste then Perris Boutique is the place for you. You’re guaranteed contemporary women’s clothing that can’t be found any old place. But what you can find here is a variety of designers whose lines feature options for women looking for style and comfort on the job, from Trina Turk and Monette Lepore to Weston Wear and Nougat. Much of their clientele consists of women in the work force, many of them real estate agents. They find Perris is the place to go for style and professionalism.
Now guys, if you’re still having a tough time putting something together, don’t sweat it. Especially not with this heat! At Bruce Julian’s Clothiers, they provide not only a fun and interesting atmosphere (try on your clothes in the Naked Girl Room!) but they also provide someone who will piece together outfits right there in your office. Mr. Ace Whitehart of Clothiers can be contacted to set up appointments and help customers find the styles that work for them. One customer he works with is a CEO who has a rack of clothes rolled into his office and then coordinated by necessity. Whether it’s corporate or a cruise, Ace has lots of great suggestions.
“Men like the Visconti. They’re long sleeved shirts that have different patterns inside the trim, behind the cuff and under the collar,” he says. And for the season? “Short sleeve camp shirts are great. Depending on the environment, wear it tucked with a tie or un-tucked without. And when thinking about fabrics, consider Cotton Tencel. It’s a wood made fiber that, in a shirt, feels like silk.” Mr. Whiteharts’ services aren’t just for exec’s and CEO’s. You can arrange to have him come to your home as well. Very cool indeed.
What is keeping cool isn’t the problem? What if you need to stay warm during a warm season? In many places the thermostat is set by the hot natured executive. So if there is a hot-natured man in a full suit and tie working across from you, you’re likely to freeze in your sleeveless blouse with ‘summer cropped’ trousers. Remedy this with a twin set (short sleeved top with Cardigan). The top can be worn with the Cardigan over it, or simply thrown over the shoulders with a knot atop the chest, a classic look. The same idea of staying warm in the summer can be created for men with a nice Pima Cotton Sweater or Sweater Vest (Polo). The Pima Cotton is perfect because it’s not a heavy fabric, but will keep you from freezing while your co-workers are seeing their breath.
Whether you’re trying to dress cool and look hot, or dress warm and look cool, Charlotte has the places to help you make that sometimes difficult transition from the beach to the boardroom.
