So it’s taken a complete week just to digest everything that has happened at Charleston Fashion Week. I’ve spent the past few days collecting articles, photos and trying to catch up on some rest.
I arrived to the tents the day before the show for final fittings. I was a bit nervous going into this. I’ve been working on these garments for the past few months and I know I will have to take some apart for sizing. This will determine how much sleep I will get tonight! It turns out there were only six separate pieces I had to adjust…not too bad.
I woke up with crazy nerves the next morning. I was so excited to get this thing on the runway. The hour arrived quickly and I was scrambling with the models backstage over hair, makeup, shoes and dressing. It was chaos and I loved every minute of it. I had a few glances of the other designers’ garments as they ran past me. Now the girls are dressed and their hair/makeup is PERFECT. I was so proud. The music started and they slowly w
alked out to the runway. I grabbed Amanda (the last model) and walked out with her for the final show. It was surreal to see the ocean of people who had their eyes on that catwalk. My 2 1/2 year old daughter met me on the runway. That instantly calmed my nerves. I was feeling a rush of excitement and happiness. The show continued and the models kept on going. It was time to announce the winners. We all stood on stage and Ayoka read the names. Sadly, mine wasn’t called but I rooted for the others the rest of the way. The rest of the night was filled with celebration and letting down my hair.
The next morning, the designers and press were invited to a luncheon at McCrady’s (a great downtown Charleston restaurant). We mingled over the previous night of events and sat down to an elegant lunch. I had a chance to chat with Ashley Reid and Marysia Reeves (two of my favorite designers from CFW). It was also the first time we (the emerging designers) were able to really talk. There were some really great people there. I am so glad I had the chance to meet and share with them.
The rest of the week was full of fashion shows, glitz and press. I was so excited to see the final challenge that was given to the three finalists. They were given old oxford shirts and challenged to create a haute-couture piece in dedication to the late Alexander McQueen. It would need to reflect his design aesthetic. My mind was already racing with what I would do. The final night was here and the curtain closed with the challenge winner as Larika Page. She had a strong collection all the way through. I clapped loud for her.
Charleston Fashion Week came, shined bright, and leaves us with great stories, photos and new chapters. I feel I won just by being able to show a collection on that runway. It was truly what I needed as far as motivation goes. I have come this far….there is nothing stopping me now. I would like to thank all the people of Charleston Magazine and everything they do to make this happen. Everyone was so helpful and kind. I am now ready to edit, photograph and work on production so…..be on the lookout for my lab
el.
Its been fun,

My first design that sold. A bride ordered these for her bridesmaids. The wedding was in the Bahamas and turned out so beautiful.
Now that the clothing line I’ll be showing at Charleston Fashion Week is closer to completion, I’m looking ahead. I’m building my “story” for the runway. All the pieces will come together for a brief moment…that moment has to be memorable and exactly what I envisioned. The last thing to tackle on this list is SHOES!!! I must keep it consistent and be sure that they will not detract from the garments. Have you ever had shop shoes for 10 garments at the same time?! This is new…and fun. They will be understated but lend to the overall look.
There has been so much publicity in the early stages of this upcoming fashion show. I’m not used to seeing my name and work in print for so many to see. This has also forced me to look ahead…much farther than CFW. I’m looking into production. What a solid sentence that is! I didn’t expect to be at this stage in my fashion endeavours so soon! This opportunity to show my line next month has been such a turbo boost. I’ve compiled my list of manufacturers and begun asking questions. I plan to keep all production inside the United States. I’m one for the environmentally friendly and economically conscious route. I have to get my work produced and into the showrooms…God, be with me.

The second is a dress I made for myself for a Marine Corps Ball and The Grande Dunes in Myrtle Beach. This dress was inspired from the bridesmaids dresses that sold.
So, CFW is only three weeks away! This has happened so fast. Time flies when you are having fun; and fun it has been all the way through. I wouldn’t be doing it if it wasn’t. I anticipate success and failure as this all rolls out. This is a journey of pure passion… and I’m just beginning.

Charlotte area designer Hannalei Taylor was recently selected to compete in the Emerging Designer Competition at Charleston Fashion Week this March. Join her weekly as she chronicles her Countdown to the Catwalk at Charleston Fashion Week.
The lastest excitement started with the email I recieved in around October. It was time to “Start our engines (sewing machines)”. It was time again for Charleston Fashion Week. I started sketching right away.
Fashion design began for me as soon as I fell in love with art. I studied every kind. I just didn’t know where to focus in. The fashion department at Radford University in Radford, Virginia opened my eyes. I had my new obsession. After interning for Araks in Manhattan … it clicked.
A fresh piece of muslin is a blank canvas. Draping fabric over the mannequin is molding clay. Finalizing and loving a design is writing that perfect song. I found the art I was looking for.
The day now begins with a necessary cup of coffee and a visit to my inspiration board. At this point in the game, I’m trying to stay consistant with the deadline. Charleston Fashion Week is only 7 weeks away!!!! That really means 5! Okay…breathe. The patterns have been done (that’s the most labor intensive part). The patterns are the blueprints for the design. I’ve begun sewing the pieces of silk, chiffon and lace. It’s coming together.
There are a few episodes of anxiety here and there but that just goes along with it. There’s a bit of blood, sweat and tears with this kind of thing too. We are our own worst critics…enough said about that.
With CFW 2010 only weeks away, I will continue to focus on the workspace with patterns and fabrics that decorate the surface. I cannot express how excited I am about this production that will take place in the streets of Charleston, SC. They have done a beautiful job in the past few years and I am so thankful to be a part of it. That runway will belong to me for a moment … it gives me goosebumps.
Until next week … back to the sewing room.

Next up was a visit to see Irina in Upper East Manhattan, NY. She was inspired by Coney Island and it was here own little “Thank You” to New York for helping to inspire her dreams. While reviewing her designs, Tim wasn’t liking the furs that Irina had created and told her to rethink them. But without a thought about what he had told her, they were off to visit with Irina’s family. Irina’s mother you could tell was always supportive and proud of her daughter, but I can’t say the same for her father. Either way I’m excited to see what she has to bring to Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.
Lastly, Tim made his way to Dayton, Ohio to visit with Althea where he learned she was inspired by Sci-Fi movies and the women in those films. Althea experimented with shapes and proportions and I had a strong feeling that Tim was worried about her looks being too costume. After they chatted about this and that, it was off to meet Althea’s family and friends which she says has always been her support system. I have a feeling that Althea is going to surprise not only me but the judges as well as she finishes her collection and shows it at Bryant Park.
Trouble occurred when Tim phoned Irina about her tee-shirts with the birds on them. She was planning to use them in her show but come to find out that she doesn’t have access to use them… she may have to create her own new look.
While Althea and Irina are waiting for Carol-Hannah to arrive you can tell the tension between then is still a little rocky. Come to find out that Carol-Hannah is sick with a stomach virus… not good. So the girls head to the workroom and finally Carol-Hannah comes in and look terrible. I feel bad for her, the last thing she needs is to feel like crap when her future is at stake. While the ladies are working hard to finish up their collections, they get a surprise visit from Nina Garcia and Michael Kors who give them some last minute advise. Not long after that, Heidi and Tim return to tell the ladies that they have one surprise… to create a 13th look that will also be shown. They then send in Logan, Christopher, and Gordana in to help the 3 designers come up with the last look.
The show ends with what seems to be a lot of work for all the three final designers, and poor Carol-Hannah is not getting any better.
Be sure to tune in to Lifetime next Thursday for the season Finale of Project Runway Season 6 where only one designer will be crowed the winner! It’s sew worth it!!!

Wow! I’ve been to a few Fashion Weeks during my tenure at Charlotte STYLE Magazine, but Charleston Fashion Week by far has been the most fun.
When I arrived at the Tents at Marion Square, I had experienced in Deja’ Vu as I almost felt I was at Bryant Park. I was greeted by the fabulous team at Leap Frog communications who handed me my media pass and escorted me to my front row seat.
The bridal show featured fierce couture gowns by designers and boutiques in the Charleston area. But these weren’t your grandma’s dresses (though I’m sure some of your grandmothers probably have beautiful vintage gowns that you would actually wear today). The style of the gowns varied from rocker chic, to beach beauty to classic couture. Brides.com Senior Editor Ann Chertoff, presented bridal shopping tips to eager brides and attendees alike. And to our surprise a gentleman in the audience proposed to his girlfriend and runway model on the catwalk at the event!
The evening shows brought on so many eager stylistas and stylistos that standing room only dominated the tents. I sat on the front row directly across from Project Runway Finalist Mychael Knight and Charleston Magazine’s Fashion Editor Ayoka Lucas. On this night the three finalists of the Emerging Designers competition showed their new collections on the runway to the judges one last time before the Finale Gala where the winner, Marysia, was announced.
Charleston Fashion Week is definitely an annual event that I would recommend to all lovers of fashion and style. The eclectic mix of attendees created an atmosphere that I’m looking forward to experiencing next year.
Until Then,
B. Wright

There are so many things my mother taught me and to go down the list would take days and in fact years…21 to be exact. But, that is what the month of May is all about and now that I am a mama myself, those tips on “How to be a Highly Successful Person” re-play and rewind in my head quite frequently. There are quite a few of her rules that I take to heart and apply to my life on a daily basis while others, I simply can’t keep up. But, we must admit that there are and have been many times when there is no other person we can run to or no one else that will allow us to say the most inappropriate things simply because saying it, feels so good. She gave up her size 4 waist for us and sacrificed many a night and day so that our lives would unfold as flawlessly as they have and for that we are thankful.
This month in STYLE, our Beauty Editor, Prima Donna is bringing you ideas and tips on how to look flawlessly fresh for years to come; MyStyle is taking you on a much needed vacation… Uptown, downtown and in Ballantyne and Fashion is taking you on a final trip back to Charleston Fashion Week for a look at some Local Emerging Designers including Ashley Reid, a native Charlottean, a West Charlotte graduate and Chapel Hill alum. Our Bonus Feature is an ode to the most fabulous women in your STYLISH team’s lives…our mothers. Happy Mother’s Day (from Charlotte STYLE Magazine) to my momma, your momma and everyone’s Mommy. Enjoy!
And just for kicks…
What my mother was trying to teach me when she thought I wasn’t listening:
1- At least once (well, now I’m just fibbing) so at least 5-10 times a day I am prone to behaving like a brat and a spoiled one at that. Those that know me best may chalk it up to “my personality” but after 24 years of good practice I have learned that everyday can be my birthday and I will cry if I want to. Why?? Because…I want to!
2- I like to dream and I like to do it with a realistic practicality that if I dream of finishing my book by the end of this year, have a waist size of 27 and no less and purchase a Lexus RX while wearing a funky pair of Fendi wedges then so be it. It adds a little more sparkle to my day when I think about grandiose fantasies with a touch of reality to them. My mom is the uber and ultra goal achiever and she raised my brother and me to not set limits or boundaries on ourselves. What you want in life, you can obtain.
3- I will never be the one to keep my house spotless and white-carpeted clean but you can best believe it will look like Mary Poppins meets Merry Maids when it is time for company. Appearance is everything so I swear to always keep that up.
4- Lying is NOT fibbing and it is not ladylike or attractive or acceptable and is in fact THE biggest sin of them all but for some insane reason it is so easy (and many times, much more polite) to do so…
5- Beauty is important, to look good is crucial BUT one day and very soon your priorities will shift and when life throws you lemons it won’t matter how fresh your manicure is or if you have selected the proper pumps for the job because if you are not lathered down in Pond’s Cold Cream and smell like anything other than Estee Lauder then you can forget making the lemonade!

There’s something to say for a stylish woman, a true power player in the sense that she can rock her own personally acquired David Yurman , purchase her own Range with the interior customized to her liking and she can own (and NOT have to rent) her 3-bedroom loft in Noda or a spacious penthouse in the Arlington. She sets her own business hours and spends her weekends as she pleases.
Now, for the fierce Forever 21 wearing fashionista or the Prada-clad promising young professional there is no need to fear because your time is coming. You may question when and what the heck is taking so long, especially as you peruse Neimans (but from entrance to Ralph Lauren) or as you drive down Queens admiring the architecture and the Acura MDX to your left as you gaze out of your ‘04 Explorer. Patience is a virtue but persistence is vital. So, if you want to be that power player then PLAY and if you want to be that Ferrari owner or Escalade driven entrepreneur then DRIVE because while Bohomenian inspired clothing may be worth rocking, a lazy state of mind is not.
This month, Charlotte Style is all about getting IT done in everything from our Beauty feature written by an up and coming Celebrity makeup artist to changing the way you shop and where you go to find that “quick fashion fix”.
We’ve even thrown in a couple extras with an exclusive “Scene and Heard” and a fresh and fabulous look at emerging fashion designers as your Stylish Team spent a weekend at the second annual Charleston Fashion Week.
I am ridiculously pleased as punch to feature a stylist, an ingénue, an inspiring visionary and the creative mind behind Charleston’s Fashion Week in our MyStyle feature of Ayoka Lucas, the style editor at Charleston Magazine AND a funky, fresh and fashionable power playee’. So, as we get ready for Spring, let’s shake off our tweed coats, shimmy out of our cropped leather jackets and kick off the knee boots BUT, let’s not forget to do it in STYLE.
Always Stylish,
